A noticeable earthquake occurred at 20:16 on January 8. The epicenter was located 66.7 kilometers northeast of Taitung County Government, with a focal depth of 33.9 kilometers and a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale.

The quake was felt across Taiwan. Tremors reached magnitude 3 in Hualien, Taichung, and Changhua; magnitude 2 in Yunlin, Chiayi, and Nantou; and even magnitude 1 in Taipei and New Taipei. This comes less than 14 hours after a magnitude 4.1 quake was felt at 06:19 on the 8th. No damage has been reported so far.
