Nantou County is one of Taiwan’s most nature-rich counties, where you can admire autumn maple leaves, winter plum blossoms, and spring cherry blossoms, as well as visit Hehuanshan Mountain, Qingjing Farm, Wuling, Xitou, and Wuling Farm, plus the famous Sun Moon Lake. With national-level scenery waiting to be explored all year round, visiting Nantou and staying cooped up in a hotel is truly a waste.
The first stop on HowToTrip’s heartfelt local travel journey is Puli. Nantou County boasts too many beautiful attractions, so visitors often spend little time in their hotel rooms. Find a clean and comfortable hotel for the night without paying sky-high prices. Moreover, being close to Sun Moon Lake and Qingjing, Puli offers much lower rates than those two destinations. The money you save can be used to enjoy lunch at a well-known hotel with your whole family — getting the best value for your money.
More reasons to stay in Puli: the town has numerous factory tour attractions perfect for family trips, as well as the award-winning Chung Tai World and the long-renowned Paper Dome. These unique buildings can help cultivate an appreciation for aesthetics.
The Grand Hotel Puli is located in the city center of Puli and has only been open for five years. Major attractions such as Sun Moon Lake, Qingjing Farm, Aowanda, Lushan Hot Springs, Chung Tai Chan Monastery, and Puli Paper Dome are all within a one-hour drive from the hotel. Family-run, it understands the local culture and ingredients best. The special package includes distinctive local meals for breakfast and dinner. Dinner features venison, Puli sugarcane bamboo shoots, plum sauce duck skewers, and old-style preserved vegetable chicken soup, with a total of six dishes, one soup, and one fruit. Moms can bring elders or friends to enjoy a cozy dinner at the hotel and chat away in comfort.
Staying an extra night costs just +$1,000 or +$1,800. This winter is the perfect opportunity to explore Puli or Nantou County.

Puli’s traditional paper mill, with 30 years of history and culture, has been revitalized through comprehensive planning. The space is now filled with creativity and experiential charm. What you see here is not just the final product of paper, but the diverse possibilities of how paper is used in everyday life. The “Paper Dragon Creative Museum” exhibition area is entirely designed with “paper” as the material, extensively using self-produced items for decor—showcasing creative possibilities to young visitors.
The Chung Tai Chan Monastery was built at a cost of nearly 1 billion New Taiwan Dollars, designed by renowned Taiwanese architect Ieoh Ming Pei, and officially completed in September 2001. The Chung Tai World Museum, along with the Chung Tai Chan Monastery and the Chung Tai World Museum Woodcarving Branch, form a linear complex. The architectural ensemble uses a “Chinese style with Western construction” approach to showcase the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture.
The main building features a unique golden lotus petal dome shape. The column-like structure atop is the spire (sikhara), a characteristic feature of ancient Indian stupas. This design makes the Chung Tai Chan Monastery a “tower-temple integrated” structure. At night, it emits twelve beams of light.
The most popular celebrity shop in Puli – 18°C Chocolate Workshop
What’s hottest is its 21 varieties of Italian handmade gelato. Even during Chinese New Year, you’ll find crowds enjoying ice cream. A small box with 2 scoops costs $100, while a large box with 3 scoops is $140 – prices that rival those of high-end foreign gelato. Surrounding offerings such as customized chocolates, tree-ring cakes, cream puffs, puddings, and taiyaki are all from the same shop. They even manage their own parking lot and restrooms. Who knew such a small town could hide a business genius?
