In the blink of an eye, maple leaf season has arrived. Have you planned where to capture the beauty of autumn leaves this year? Whether in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, or other countries, there are many opportunities to photograph different maple leaves. With that in mind, FeverTravel recently invited 2016’s Top 10 Best Travel Photographers in the World, Raven, to host a photography lecture and share his tips on shooting maple leaves.

Raven was once shortlisted as one of the top 25 finalists in the “Best Jobs in the World” competition hosted by Tourism Australia in 2013. He excels at discovering hidden scenic spots, and his work was recently selected as a judge’s pick in the National Geographic Photo Contest. His appearance attracted a large audience eager to exchange ideas.
To capture the essence of maple leaves, Raven recommends focusing on three aspects: “light selection,” “lens usage,” and “photography techniques.” Regarding light selection, the effects of front lighting and backlighting differ, but special attention must be paid to the camera’s metering and use of exposure compensation to control the brightness of the leaves—otherwise, they might turn out too dark or overly saturated.
A macro lens can highlight the texture of the leaves
As for lens usage, Raven suggests making good use of ultra-wide-angle lenses, telephoto lenses, and macro lenses to achieve different photographic effects. An ultra-wide-angle lens captures the entire scene before your eyes, emphasizing a grand and majestic feel; a telephoto lens allows you to zoom in on red leaves on trees while avoiding crowds; and a macro lens highlights the textures of the leaves.
Additionally, you can choose suitable backgrounds for contrast, use slow shutter speeds to enhance motion effects, and apply various photography techniques to make your photos more unique and impactful.
