Look, Doraemon is here！Whether you’re a millennial, a '90s kid, or an '80s kid, you must know Doraemon—or should we say, Doraemon！As a fan, you’ll want to plan a trip to Tokyo ASAP！The reason? The Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, will hold “THE DORAEMON EXHIBITION TOKYO 2017” from November 1 to January 8 of next year. What makes this exhibition special is that it features 30 active contemporary Japanese artists who present their personal interpretations of Doraemon and other characters.
This exhibition involves 30 artists, including Takashi Murakami, Mika Ninagawa, and Yoshitomo Nara. The theme image was created by renowned artist Takashi Murakami, who fused Doraemon with his signature motif “flowers” to produce a massive 6-meter by 3-meter artwork.
Famous photographer and director Mika Ninagawa took photos under the theme “If Doraemon Were My Boyfriend,” capturing images of Doraemon with girls at beaches, aquariums, and bowling alleys. Meanwhile, Masuda Sebastian, known for his vibrant and sweet Harajuku-style designs, transformed the 2.6-meter-tall Doraemon into a pink, bead-and-lace-covered figure, moving away from its traditional sky-blue image. We wonder if fans can accept this new look?
There’s also a visually stunning piece in the exhibition, featuring a large stitched cowhide inspired by ancient cave paintings. It depicts a mother wolf carrying a naked Shizuka, surrounded by bats, swallows, and other animals, creating a mythological atmosphere.
But the most talked-about piece is probably “Shizuka” by Sakamoto Tomoyuki. He designed Shizuka with a youthful appearance, transforming her into a giant twisting her wet skirt, sparking endless imagination among viewers.
Aside from viewing the exhibition pieces, there are plenty of boutique items to choose from at the venue—fans are sure to shop to their heart’s content！In line with the exhibition, even the café The Sun, located right next to the venue, has launched a special limited menu, including Anywhere Door parfait and Dora Bell omelet rice, plus great photo spots for fans to take pictures！
