After reclaiming the franchise rights for Starbucks in Shanghai last year, the world’s largest coffee chain accelerated its expansion in the area. In December 2017, it opened the world’s largest store — “Starbucks Reserve Roastery.” The two-story outlet covers an impressive 30,000 square feet, equivalent to about half the size of a football field.
Located on Nanjing Road in Shanghai, the café is extremely popular, often requiring guests to wait two hours or more just to get in. In addition to coffee, the shop offers over 100 beverage options, including cocktails and coffee-infused beer, as well as food items not found in regular Starbucks locations.
Furthermore, the store’s design includes an AR feature developed in collaboration with Alibaba, allowing customers to experience the coffee-making process from bean to cup. The outlet also provides app-based ordering and Alipay payment services.
Currently, the Shanghai branch is the company’s second “Starbucks Reserve Roastery.” The first one is located in Seattle, USA, with future plans to open additional locations in Tokyo, Milan, New York, and Chicago.
