Can human creations truly triumph over nature? The United Arab Emirates (UAE), located near the equator, boasts numerous highways that, despite being newly built and stunningly designed, are no match for the encroaching desert sands. Australian photographer Irenaeus Herok recently traveled to the region and used a drone to document how man-made structures struggle against the overwhelming power of nature.
Officially known as the United Arab Emirates, the country lies on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, with Oman and Saudi Arabia as its neighbors. Due to its tropical desert climate, much of the UAE was originally a barren expanse of desert.
However, since the discovery of oil in the last century, the UAE has transformed from a desolate land into a wealthy nation. Cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are now home to numerous skyscrapers, turning the desert into bustling metropolises.
Yet, even human-made structures can sometimes fall prey to nature’s might. Many beautifully constructed highways have been gradually buried by desert sands. Irenaeus’s aerial photographs capture these constructions slowly vanishing into the dunes, serving as a humbling reminder of nature’s formidable power.
