Originally built for irrigation water storage, Hulupi Nature Park in Guantian, Tainan is now a beautifully scenic ecological park. A road runs through the park, giving it the appearance of a gourd tied with a belt – hence the name “Hulupi,” which means “gourd pond.” Located beside Provincial Highway 176 in Guantian, Tainan, the park is just a 10-minute drive from the exit of National Freeway 3 via Provincial Highway 84.

At the entrance, there is a large landscape painting that looks quite spectacular, though parts of it are obscured by foliage, making the pattern difficult to discern.

Walking along the scenic pathway further inside, you’ll find picturesque waterscapes on your right. According to locals, walking here in the cool evening breeze during summer is very pleasant — something we’d also love to experience firsthand.

Before long, we reached our destination: the brand-new “grindstone slide” at Hulupi Nature Park, completed and opened in November 2018.

The two-story slide towering by the shores of Guantian Hulupi was inspired by the image of an elephant. Its pure white color and sleek lines create a simple yet striking design. The slide features one higher and one lower section, as well as segmented wave-like curves, suitable for children of different ages and offering a refreshingly fun experience. Additionally, the floor mats around the slide are designed in accordance with safety standards for children’s play areas and have passed relevant inspections, ensuring both fun and safety for kids.

Climbing the spiral staircase with the kids was exciting, and the spiral design added an air of mystery that made us even more eager to try it out XD

From the top, it looked thrilling — sliding down the wave-shaped slide felt super “slick” and was a lot of fun. Plus, you get to enjoy the beautiful lake and mountain views of Hulupi Nature Park while sliding down.

A small crossbar has been installed at the entrance, and there’s also a handrail nearby. Yo went down the lower slide first. Along the way, there’s a wave feature that cushions the impact of a straight plunge down the grindstone slide. The pause point makes the ride even more unique.

Climbing up to the 5.5-meter-high slide, which features two waves, felt like “riding the waves” — like playing in the sea. The kids were thrilled and kept shouting, “So fun!” After one ride, they dashed back to the line, unable to get enough.

In addition to the unique slides, there are also plastic slides for kids who aren’t ready for the main ones or for younger toddlers.

Best of all, Hulupi Nature Park has a large skating rink. Yo brought his snakeboard, and with no other kids around that day, he had the whole rink to himself — gliding freely and having a blast while getting great exercise.

The service center at the entrance of Hulupi Nature Park is a retro red-brick building. On the first floor, there’s Tainan’s famous nostalgic candy store “Qian Lai Ye,” which sells many old-school toys, snacks, and ice cream. We had fun browsing and found lots of interesting little items that brought back childhood memories.

We didn’t get to explore the whole park due to other plans, but according to online info, if you walk across the suspension bridge, you’ll find a large water chestnut field. We hope to bring the kids here again in the summer to explore more of the natural ecology.
