In the cold winter, what everyone looks forward to is hot springs and playing in the snow, and in Taiwan many people fly to other countries just to see snow. But actually, you can also enjoy beautiful snowy scenery in Taiwan’s high mountain areas too. However, you might be deterred by the many regulations of snow season hiking. In fact, hiking in Taiwan’s high mountains during the snow season is not as difficult as you think.
After reading this introduction to Taiwan’s high mountain snow season compiled by our editor, you won’t miss out on the stunning snowy views of Taiwan’s high mountains due to a lack of understanding. Come and check out the recommended hiking routes during the snow season in Taiwan’s high mountains, and make thorough preparations before you set off.
Taiwan’s high mountain-type national parks such as Hehuanshan and Xueshan, with mountains over 3,000 meters, still allow hikers to enter during the winter so they can enjoy the snowy scenes. However, you must follow the regulations and controls of the high mountain snow season to ensure personal safety.
For Xueshan, the general application is for hiking groups of 3–6 people, and applications must be submitted 7 days to 1 month before entering the park. The snow training application is for hiking groups of up to 10 people, with the same application period as the general one, but you also need to submit a snow training plan and itinerary proposal.
If you want to hike during the snow season, everyone must have snow gear, and the team leader must have a snow training certificate or a mountaineering guide certification. Depending on the climate and geography of each high mountain in Taiwan, the snow season hiking regulations vary. Be sure to check the official website of the relevant management authority before applying.

The control of Taiwan’s high mountain snow season is mainly due to the high altitude and changeable weather. To ensure a safe and smooth snow season hiking experience, here are the recommended snow season hiking gears to bring. In addition to tents, food, etc., there are also special considerations for equipment and clothing.
Snow season hiking clothing is mainly based on a three-layer system: outer layer – wind and rainproof, middle layer – wool or down for warmth, inner layer – moisture-wicking. Additionally, hats, scarves, and goggles are essential. Besides keeping warm and blocking the wind, don’t forget to protect your eyes from discomfort caused by the reflection of the snowy mountains.

Snow season hiking boots can generally be divided into the following three types. Among them, I would recommend that when heading to Taiwan’s high mountains for snow hiking, you wear Backpacking Boots or Mountaineering Boots, prioritizing snow hiking boots with warmth, anti-slip, and waterproof features.
■ Hiking Boots/Shoes:Lightweight hiking shoes, suitable for beginner-level hiking routes.
■ Backpacking Boots:Heavy-duty hiking shoes, suitable for medium
■Mountaineering Boots:Snow mountaineering boots usually feature anti-slip or groove designs, some come with crampons, and they are suitable for snowy or icy climbing routes.

■Ice Axe:It’s somewhat like a trekking pole, designed to help you maintain balance on snowy terrain. In case of a slip, you can plunge the axe tip into the snow to stop the fall!
■Crampons:These are devices that can be tightly attached to mountaineering boots to prevent slipping and ensure stable footing on snow and ice.
■Climbing Rope:To assist hikers during snow activities or rock climbing, this gear generally includes the rope, rope protector, auxiliary rope, and carabiners. Before setting out, it's a good idea to learn some highly useful knot-tying techniques.

When driving to the trailhead, remember to equip your vehicle with snow chains. During Taiwan’s high mountain snow season control periods, staff will inspect and confirm their presence—not only to ensure smooth passage but also for safety!

First-time winter hikers need not worry—Hehuanshan Main Peak and East Peak are the most beginner-friendly high mountains in Taiwan. The overall hiking routes are not overly challenging, but during the winter climbing season, you’ll need well-prepared snow gear and prior physical training. Then, follow professional mountain guides to conduct on-site snow climbing training in the high-altitude snowy terrain.
Along the journey up the Hehuanshan range, everything is blanketed in white, growing hazier the higher you go—sometimes you can’t even see the path clearly. The arrow bamboo along the trail, frosted with snow and ice, glows with an extraordinary radiance under the sunlight, offering a unique beauty. Experiencing winter hiking on Taiwan’s high mountains, climbing through a world of white and playing in the snow—what better way to challenge yourself?

When the northeast monsoon arrives, Snow Mountain often receives the heaviest snowfall among Taiwan’s high peaks. Walking along the path to Snow Mountain Main Peak, you’ll find trees covered in white and the ground blanketed in thick snow, as if stepping into a European fairy tale.
The winter scene from 369 Mountain Hut into the Black Forest is even more breathtaking. Though this stretch of road has deep snow and is uphill, seeing the “ice column spectacle” in the Black Forest makes it all worthwhile—it’s a unique sight only found in Snow Mountain, rarely seen in other high mountains in Taiwan.
P.S. When finally ascending to the Snow Valley at the main peak, be especially careful—make good use of your ice axe, watch your steps, and mind your movements.

Qilainan is one of the most approachable high mountains in Taiwan, making it a great choice for winter hiking. Especially during the brief moments after sunrise, the sunlight paints the mountaintop golden, contrasting beautifully with the lingering white snow below. The mountain vista before your eyes resembles a gradient canvas—a view exclusive to winter hiking!
Additionally, when the Tianchi Lake freezes over, you can even enjoy the fun of ice skating. But be cautious and watch out for cracks in the ice to avoid falling into the freezing water!
