Chengdu, China (Sichuan), April 21 (Lin Feng) — On the 21st, the 2nd “Overseas Chinese Town” Cup Rock Climbing Championship of Sichuan Province, hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Sports Bureau and Chengdu Overseas Chinese Town Park Plaza, and organized by the Sichuan Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Association, was held at the Overseas Chinese Town Park Plaza. At the same time, an 8-day Outdoor Sports Goods Culture Festival kicked off.
Gao Min, deputy secretary-general of the Sichuan Mountaineering Association, introduced that this rock climbing championship is the highest-level climbing competition in the province. Lasting three days, it features 110 male and female athletes from top-tier teams across Sichuan. The competition includes difficulty and speed events, with the top three from each team earning national second-class athlete certificates, along with prizes and trophies. During the climbing event, performances such as freestyle BMX biking, fashionable street dance, and skateboard fusion acts will also be presented to enhance the festive atmosphere.
To better promote rock climbing and provide participants and enthusiasts with opportunities for exchange and competition, the event integrates culture, leisure, entertainment, and sports. During breaks and over the following five days, free family and individual climbing experiences with prizes will be offered, allowing residents of Chengdu to experience the thrill of extreme sports firsthand.
The Outdoor Sports Goods Culture Festival is now in its fourth consecutive year. During the festival, over a thousand products from 16 merchants at Overseas Chinese Town Park Plaza—including Decathlon, Jinfeng Sports, and Nike Factory Store—will be offered at discounts ranging from 20% to 80%. Promotions include shopping giveaways and lucky draws, with prizes such as high-value sports bicycles and stylish sports travel bags. According to the plaza’s management, recent editions of the Outdoor Sports Goods Culture Festival have been highly popular among Chengdu residents, with expanding scale and increasing merchant participation.
Rock climbing is a sport derived from mountaineering, originating in Europe in the 1950s. Since high-altitude mountaineering is rarely accessible to the general public, but climbing cliffs is more attainable and offers greater excitement and challenge, rock climbing quickly gained popularity worldwide as an independent and youth-favorite sport.
