China News Service, Lhasa, May 2 (Chen Xiangyu) — Sixty mountaineering enthusiasts set off on May 2 from the Yangbajing Alpine Training Base west of Lhasa, ready to challenge two peaks over 6,000 meters in elevation.
Participants in this year’s “10th Tibet Spring Mountaineering Festival” came from 14 cities (and clubs) across the country, including Hong Kong and Macau. The event is mainly aimed at beginner-level mountaineers. The Tibet Spring Mountaineering Festival had been suspended for the past two years but resumed this year.
Nyima Tsering, head of the Tibet Autonomous Region Mountaineering Team, introduced that the main climb this year is Qizhi Peak, standing at 6,206 meters, located northwest of Yangbajing, with an average slope of about 50 degrees. This “entry-level” climbing peak has moderate altitude and difficulty, making it suitable for novice mountaineers.
To ensure safety during the festival, the Tibet Mountaineering Team deployed nearly 50 high-altitude guides, coaches, and support staff at a ratio of 1:2 to ensure the safety of the participants. Full-time professional medical and logistical personnel were also provided throughout the event.
