Feeling like life is too dull? Then a work-exchange stay might be one of your best options. In recent years, Taiwan has seen a growing trend of work-exchange stays, where travelers earn free lodging by offering their labor. This not only saves on accommodation costs but also allows guests to spend more time in different cities and deeply experience local life. What sets this youth hostel in Hualien apart from other homestays is that guests can also exchange accommodations by performing music, creating artwork, cooking, and more.

The founder, Yeh Chi-Hao, spent a year traveling to over thirty cities including Toronto, Japan, Cuba, and the United States. Due to limited funds, he mostly stayed in youth hostels during his travels, gradually falling in love with their casual and warm atmosphere. Upon returning to Taiwan, he decided to transform his family’s 35-year-old hotel into a youth hostel.

Having majored in landscape design at university, he designed the hostel with many spaces that blend comfort and style. The nearly 100-ping public area is filled with creative touches, from the lounge to the room design concepts, all featuring eco-friendly and retro industrial styles. The hostel also frequently hosts various events to create lasting memories for guests. The adjacent kitchen is open for guests to use freely, offering many free ingredients and fruits, treating every guest like family.

The hostel also enlisted 3D artist Hsieh Chung-Hui to paint murals of many Taiwanese scenic spots on the walls of various floors, giving guests delightful surprises around every corner. The interior design of the rooms is equally thoughtfully done, using wood as the main material to exude warmth and comfort, ensuring guests not only sleep well but also feel at home, creating an “eco-friendly, thoughtful, and warm” hostel experience.
