“Kampung” means hometown in Malay, and it’s said that you can find the most authentic Hainanese chicken rice in a Kampung. Kampung Famous Hainanese Chicken Rice has only been open for a month but has already gained quite a following. It’s reportedly always packed and customers have to queue during peak dining hours. It’s even prepared by a Chinese chef from Malaysia who pairs the local-style five sauces with the chicken rice. The glossy chicken thigh and drizzled sauce are simply mouthwatering. Ever since I had delicious Hainanese chicken rice in Bangkok last time, I’ve been longing for that flavor again — which is why we were drawn here.

Kampung Famous is located near Zhongshan MRT Station, just a three-minute walk from Exit 1. When we arrived at the shop, there was already a huge crowd waiting in line. The signboard is a striking yellow and green combo, giving off an energetic Southeast Asian vibe. There are also two street-stall-like seats at the entrance, making it even more fun to eat Hainanese chicken rice there.

“Either Kuala Lumpur, or come here!” These bold ten words are hung just below the signboard — hard not to notice — and they certainly raise expectations for this authentic Hainanese chicken rice.

After ordering two Hainanese chicken rice boxes, we waited nearby for our number to be called. It was a Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM, and we waited about fifteen minutes, which was an acceptable wait time. For those who want to eat here but avoid the queue, it’s recommended to steer clear of peak meal hours. By around 2:00 PM, the crowds thin out, so you won’t need to wait in line then.

A special feature is that the shop also offers free authentic Hainanese chicken rice soup — “Sarawak Pepper Soup.” However, this soup isn’t really to my taste because the pepper flavor is very strong, which felt a bit overpowering for me.

Hainanese Chicken Rice Box – NT$100
Kampung offers three items: Hainanese Chicken Rice Boxes, Hainanese Chicken Thighs (à la carte), and Chicken Oil Rice. Ordering the box is the most recommended and cost-effective choice. It comes with a whole chicken thigh and a decent portion. The contents of the Hainanese Chicken Rice Box are simple: a chicken thigh, white rice, blanched bean sprouts under the rice, some cucumber on the side, and a drizzle of special sauce with chopped scallions. The portion is just right for a woman, but may feel a bit small for men.

In terms of flavor, the chicken thigh meat is tender and delicious. The slightly spicy sauce is appetizing, and there’s also minced ginger for pairing. However, I wasn’t too fond of the texture of the rice that day — it felt too soft, even mushy, lacking fragrance. It seemed chicken oil had been drizzled on, but the flavor didn’t stand out much, which was a bit of a letdown. But I guess people have different preferences when it comes to rice texture, and maybe some friends actually enjoy this kind of softness. I personally prefer rice with a bit more bite.
