Every country has its own culture and customs. Aside from Japan being a popular travel destination for many, Taiwan and Japan have also shared much historical interaction, so there isn’t much unfamiliarity when it comes to understanding the culture. However, there are still some minor misconceptions. Here are five common misunderstandings in daily life.

3. Are Japanese women all gentle and Japanese men all chauvinistic?
Japanese men are raised to believe they should earn money, support their families, work hard, and endure everything. However, as times change, Japanese society is gradually aligning more with other countries, and there are now increasing cases of couples working together, sharing income, and splitting household duties—especially among younger generations.
4. Why are Japanese companies conservative and hierarchical?
Japanese society has historically had clear social hierarchies, and company structures have traditionally followed a seniority-based system. But with the tide of globalization and innovation, rigid systems can sometimes pose serious risks even to Japanese businesses. As a result, many large companies are beginning to reform by recruiting talent regardless of educational background, age, or gender, both domestically and internationally.

5. Is Japanese food always light and healthy?
Known as the “Land of Longevity,” Japan’s renowned cuisine often gives the impression of being nutritious and healthy. However, overall, Japanese dishes tend to be relatively high in salt. For example, ramen is usually high in both salt and oil content, and thus higher in calories. Nevertheless, Japan’s longevity is also related to dietary habits, including an emphasis on natural flavors, a pursuit of diverse and balanced nutrition, and low intake of animal fats.
