Typhoon Maria: Dual Land and Sea Warnings Issued, Classes and Work Suspended Nationwide

As Typhoon Maria approaches, a land warning was issued at 11:30 PM on the 9th. Most areas in Taiwan will operate as usual on the 10th, but Yilan County has announced a suspension of work and classes after 3:00 PM.

Typhoon Maria (international name: MARIA) was located at 23.9°N, 127.2°E at 8:00 AM on the 10th—about 560 kilometers east of Yilan over the ocean. It is moving northwestward at a speed of 28 km/h. The central pressure is 920 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 53 m/s (approximately 191 km/h), equivalent to a Force 16 wind. Gusts can reach up to 65 m/s (around 234 km/h), equivalent to a Force 17 or higher wind. The radius of the 7-level gale zone is 280 kilometers, and that of the 10-level gale zone is 100 kilometers. It is predicted to be at 26.3°N, 120.5°E at 8:00 AM on the 11th—about 180 kilometers northwest of Keelung over the ocean.

Areas under alert include:Yilan, New Taipei, Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, Hualien, and the Matsu Islands should remain on high alert.Be prepared for strong winds and heavy rain.

The Central Weather Bureau has issued a special heavy rain warning for areas north of Taichung, while mountainous regions in central and southern Taiwan should also guard against heavy rainfall.

Multiple flights between Taipei, Kaohsiung, and destinations such as Okinawa and Sendai operated by China Airlines, EVA Air, and Peach Aviation have been canceled or delayed. Please check before departure. The strongest winds and rains are expected from the evening of the 10th to the early morning of the 11th. Updates on work and class suspensions will continue.
