In my mind, historical sites were just old buildings displaying profound yet hard-to-grasp stories and artifacts, with wordy introductions that made me — a simple woman — just want to “check in and move on.” However, Fengyi Academy breaks that mold. After renovation and reopening, the site is adorned with Q-version statues, making the historic venue full of fun and charm. Let’s take a stroll together through Taiwan’s largest academy complex.

Tickets come in several types (for those participating in the on-site lottery ticketing method), with free entry for “non-public holiday Kaohsiung residents,” and only NT$39 for holidays. The standard full price is NT$66 regardless of weekday or weekend. At NT$66 for maintaining a Grade III historical site and keeping the environment clean, the fee is quite reasonable. Discounted tickets require presentation of an ID card.
During weekdays and afternoons, the place is not crowded, allowing for carefree photography without strangers photobombing — great for enjoying your visit.
Each statue is incredibly lifelike, taking us back in time. Aside from being decorative, these Q-version statues are interactive, perfect for fun and quirky photos. Can’t think of a pose or facial expression? Just follow what Bao Bao does — you can’t go wrong.

Coin collectors will be delighted — Fengyi Academy offers three collectible coin designs to choose from, each priced at NT$50.
The most amusing and thematically relevant statues are found in the central courtyard classroom — even the variety show “Play It Big” and skit “Sneaking a Bite in Class” were filmed here.
Some students in the classroom look dazed, others are dozing off, and the bolder ones brazenly nap face-down on their desks. Does this bring back memories of your school days? Which type of student were you?
Pretending with friends, how can we make our photos look more like “melancholy shots”? Or were we just acting too seriously?
Check out what my daughter did — wow, totally no awkwardness at all.
Beyond the playful Q-version characters, the interior displays cultural relics related to the historical development of Fengyi Academy, as well as architectural structures and restoration efforts in the Fengshan area, giving visitors insight into life in the past.
For an immersive experience, the site offers free trials of Qing Dynasty fifth-rank official attire. Once dressed, you might feel tempted to paint your face black and draw a moon on your forehead, yelling “Seize the rogue and execute him!” — only to realize afterward that Judge Bao belonged to a different dynasty (surprise!).
The Q-version illustrations turn the rigid imperial examination process into something entertaining, using a Monopoly-like concept to easily understand the path to promotion.
Fengyi Academy also enshrines the God of Literature, Wenchang. During exam season, many students visit with their admission tickets to pray for success. You can also draw divination slips to learn about your fortune. With a toddler in tow, many artifacts aren’t easy to photograph — so we’ll leave those discoveries for you to explore on your own.
