An Amusement Park in a Landfill

Just a few hours’ flight away from us in Cambodia, there are children who don’t even have the chance to go to school. They can only search for their own toys in the landfill, following their parents every day to look for things they can sell. Among the items are many unclean things, but they seem to have gotten used to it. Their income usually doesn’t exceed four dollars...

On the first day after arrival, I wandered around for most of the day, chatting with them (though most of the time communication was hindered by the language barrier), playing with the kids, and buying them sodas and snacks to get them used to my presence.

While shooting, I also had to communicate with them frequently, politely asking if they were willing. If they weren’t, I had to stop. The hardest part wasn’t setting up any photography techniques, but deciding whether to keep shooting or put the camera down when faced with heartbreaking scenes. I still remember in Nepal seeing kids competing with cows for food on the street—that was one of the times I couldn’t press the shutter...

Under such economic conditions, the road is indeed difficult to walk, but I hope you won’t take the wrong path. Live with integrity and make life a little better.
