It’s not that moms intentionally play favorites, but when there’s a second baby, there’s just less time, and the excitement of being a new mom also dips a little. But hey, it’s your little brother, so at least it still gives mommy a little creative boost.

One day while browsing online, I accidentally stumbled upon a foreign mom Emily’s handmade blog. The moment I saw this hat, I fell in love with it instantly. I thought, “This would be great for my son!” So while my crafting enthusiasm was still high, I took some time to run to a yarn store and pick out suitable yarn.

I hesitated a bit about buying all this yarn at the time—it’s really not cheap. But the colors? They were exactly what I wanted, and the texture of the yarn is honestly amazing. Thinking about how winter is just around the corner, I figured I shouldn’t skimp on stuff for the kids.
Alright then—let’s do it!

Although the kind Emily shared her knitting chart, hers used European-style symbols, and there were definitely parts I didn’t quite understand. So—I just went with my imagination and figured things out as I went along. Hey, close enough counts, right?

Also, instead of using the felt teeth that were originally part of the design, I changed them to yarn-knitted ones. I thought that would make the overall texture more cohesive.

The technique for the hat isn’t hard—the challenge lies in the thinking and imagination. For this hat, I only used half double crochet and single crochet stitches.
For the main body and the big eye parts, I used the half double crochet method. For the monster horns on top of the head, I used the single crochet method.
Finally, I assembled all the parts together one by one using a yarn-specific sewing needle.

And then came the invisible stitch—every time I get to this part, I get inexplicably excited because it means I’m almost done!!

Ta-da!! Here comes our little model, always keeping up his signature funny poses.

Let me show you the front for mommy, okay? Hmm—mommy’s craftsmanship isn’t half bad!! Haha!

Come on, let’s do the monster roar again!!! Roar~~~~~~~

Every now and then, moms just want to do something for their kids. But creativity? For me, it’s not exactly an endless resource. Sometimes when I see good ideas shared by other moms online, I try to study and imitate them. And when the project is done and I see my child’s happy smile, I get a huge sense of accomplishment.
