Personal equipment: Personal equipment refers to items such as harnesses, descenders, carabiners, slings, climbing helmets, climbing shoes, chalk, and chalk bags.
Harness: The harness used for rock climbing is different from a mountaineering harness. It is specialized and not suitable for mountaineering, though a mountaineering harness can be used for climbing in a pinch. Most climbers in China use mountaineering harnesses because there are no domestic manufacturers of climbing-specific harnesses, and many climbers are also mountaineers, leading to the interchangeable use of both types.
Descender: The figure-eight descender is the most commonly used device for rappelling.
Carabiners and slings: These are used for self-protection during breaks or other maneuvers while climbing.
Climbing helmet: A small falling rock can cause serious or even fatal head injuries, making a helmet an essential piece of climbing gear.
Climbing shoes: These are specialized shoes with high friction that help conserve energy during climbs.
Chalk and chalk bag: When your hands get sweaty, applying some chalk from the bag instantly improves grip.
Climbing equipment: This includes ropes, carabiners, slings, rock anchors, rock hammers, chocks (also known as cams), and sometimes a portable hanging tent.
Rope: Rock climbing typically uses a main rope with a diameter of 9–11 mm, preferably 11 mm.
Carabiners and slings: These are essential for connecting protection points and are necessary for top-rope climbing techniques.
Rock anchors: These are metal protection devices of various shapes—such as cones, spikes, or plates—that are fixed onto the rock face. Different shapes are used depending on the type of crack.
Rock hammer: A tool used for hammering in rock anchors.
Chocks: Similar in function to rock anchors but are removable and can be placed and removed as needed for protection.
Hanging tent: A portable shelter used for overnight stays on the rock face, which is hung and secured with ropes at fixed anchor points.
Other equipment: Includes items such as backpacks, sleeping gear, cookware, stoves, knives, lighters, etc., which should be carried based on the scale of the activity, duration, and personal needs.
