Simple DIY Game: Teach Kids Colors with Colored Cellophane

Use colored cellophane to help children learn about colors and color mixing

All you need are 3–4 colors of cellophane, scissors, tape, finger puppets, toilet paper rolls, and toy glasses

First, cut the cellophane into various shapes. If you want to teach your child about shapes, cut them into squares, circles... etc., or just cut freely as you like.

After cutting, stick them onto the glass. To prevent kids from peeling them off easily, tape all edges or stick them on the other side of the glass (if reachable).

Cellophane can be layered on top of each other, which allows you to teach children the basics of color mixing.

Or you can also stick them on movable glass surfaces—perfect for sliding windows—so kids can learn about color mixing while playing. For example: when yellow cellophane slides in front of blue cellophane, it turns green.

The light shining through will also create colorful shadows.

If not taped securely, they’ll peel off easily.

If you have any spare toilet paper rolls at home, you can cover one side with cellophane and let your child look through the other side.

For younger babies who can’t see yet, seal both ends, drop small items inside, and shake to make sounds.

Babies will have a blast, plus the rolls can roll around—chasing after them while screaming and crawling.

For kids who can wear toy glasses (we’re using regular glasses here for demonstration), wrap cellophane around the lenses and let them wear them, but don’t keep them on for too long.

If you have leftover scraps of cellophane, stuff them into finger puppets to make a crinkly sound toy.

Or sew them directly into a crinkly-texture soothing blanket.

A large sheet of colored cellophane (about full-size), only costs 15 yuan. Buy 3–4 colors for under 100 yuan, and you get so many play possibilities.
