For someone who has just fallen in love with bicycle travel, before setting off, they might, like other independent travelers, spend a lot of effort planning the entire route in detail and learning about the cultural and geographical features along the way. However, they may underestimate the importance of essential long-distance cycling gear, thinking that having an expensive “good bike” is enough. Experienced cyclists warn that the importance of cycling gear must not be overlooked, as these items provide crucial protection in case of danger. So, what are the essential gear items for long-distance cycling trips?

Always wear a helmet when cycling

Although current national laws and regulations do not require cyclists to wear helmets, it is essential for protecting the head. When purchasing, prioritize ventilation, and also consider fit, padding material, and adjustable strap angles.
Additionally, cycling shorts are essential for long rides, primarily for preventing chafing and ensuring breathability. Note that, like regular pants, cycling shorts come in men's and women's versions, and can be categorized by length and purpose—such as long pants, shorts, three-quarter pants, liners, summer or winter styles. Cycling gloves are also a must; they absorb sweat, prevent slipping, ensure breathability, and protect the palms and wrists. Adding a soft handlebar grip can also reduce wrist strain from road bumps.

Don’t forget cycling glasses—they protect against wind and insects. Clear lenses are suitable for cloudy days, while tinted ones block sunlight. Choose curved frames that fit your face for better wind resistance and glare reduction, and ensure they have anti-fog features. If using prescription cycling glasses, get accustomed to them beforehand. If possible, bring a set of cycling-specific rain gear; otherwise, military-style rain gear works well for rainy rides.

Mountain bikes are best for cycling tours

Currently, popular bikes for domestic cycling tours include: mountain bikes, road bikes, folding bikes, and regular bikes. Experienced cyclists suggest, “Choose different bikes based on road conditions and trip distance.”

For example, regular bikes suit short leisure rides; road bikes are “picky” about road quality and prone to flats on rough surfaces, making them suitable only for urban or well-paved areas; folding bikes demand smoother roads, ideal for short trips, leisure rides, or combining cycling with hitchhiking; mountain bikes, designed for various terrains, have sturdy frames and thick tires, making them the most suitable for cycling tours.

Experienced cyclists recommend: for long-distance tours, an entry-level mountain bike with a quick-release mechanism is sufficient—avoid bikes with rear suspension. With a budget of around 2000 yuan, buy a complete bike; with more budget, opt for a titanium alloy bike with superior shock absorption for long trips.

       Panniers are highly useful

For long-distance cycling, use specialized bicycle panniers secured with hook-and-loop straps. In rainy seasons or wet areas, use waterproof panniers. Inside, carry essential medications—experienced cyclists suggest: 1 small bottle of iodine tincture, 1 small bottle of red medicine, 20 adhesive bandages, 2 packs of sterile cotton swabs, 1 small roll of sterile gauze, 1 roll of medical tape, 20 A.P.C tablets (mainly aspirin), 10 vials of gentamicin sulfate, 4 packs of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, 1 tube of erythromycin ointment, and 1 bottle of chloramphenicol eye drops. Of course, for serious illnesses or injuries, seek medical help immediately and go to a hospital as soon as possible.

Panniers should also include a sleeping bag, tent, knife, utensils, water bottle, and fire-starting tools—all essential for long rides. Choose a multi-tool knife set with a large blade, small knife, corkscrew, can opener, screwdriver, bottle opener, nail clipper, tweezers, toothpicks, scissors, and multi-purpose hooks; you can also add a small sewing kit. Keep the knife easily accessible. Don’t forget tea, instant coffee, juice powder, instant soup, energy bars, and trail mix. For remote areas, carry compressed biscuits for emergencies and flavor variety.

Additionally, bring a set of bike repair tools for long rides: spare tubes, pump, tire levers, patch kit, hex keys, adjustable wrench, scissors, spoke key, brake cables, etc. This is vital since you never know where the next bike shop will be.

Consider a handlebar bag, which can double as a sling bag for carrying valuables like documents.
