With spring in full bloom and the outdoors calling, whether you're an adventurous hiker or just someone who loves nature, how can you waste such a pleasant season at home? Many men are probably planning to go hiking or enjoy the fresh air with friends or family. But how should men choose the right travel gear? Here are some tips from our editor.

The right gear makes your trip much easier

As men, we might normally need a variety of gear for hiking—shoes, sportswear, and more. These are all essentials. As mentioned earlier, for snow tourism you’ll need skiwear, and for high-altitude trekking, climbing gear is a must. All these are necessary if you want to truly enjoy your trip. Another essential is a backpack. When hiking, a backpack is an incredibly important item because it’s designed ergonomically, distributing weight efficiently so that although it may look bulky, it doesn’t feel as heavy when worn. Earlier, when discussing high-altitude travel, we almost forgot to mention this—backpacks are crucial. When carrying lots of items, you can pack them all in your backpack. Made from lightweight materials, an empty backpack feels almost weightless, yet it distributes the load comfortably thanks to its ergonomic design. I strongly recommend that, if your physical condition allows, you carry some essentials in your backpack—like a rain poncho, raincoat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and even some warm clothing for the mountaintop. Being well-prepared ensures you won't suffer during your trip.

       Emergency gear is essential

Another must-have for any trip are emergency supplies. Whether you’re traveling to the grasslands, deserts, or beaches, you could easily get bitten by insects or encounter other minor injuries. It’s wise to always carry basic first aid items for pain relief, anti-inflammatory needs, and itch relief. Moreover, if you get lost in the mountains or snowy areas, a compact emergency kit becomes extremely important. Such a kit might include a flashlight, basic medical supplies, a whistle, or even fire-starting and warmth-retention tools to help keep you safe. Even in dangerous situations, these items can help you survive longer. So I highly recommend carrying a good emergency kit, especially when venturing into remote forests or mountainous regions—it’s an added layer of safety.

Choosing the Right Backpack for Men and Women

Generally speaking, backpacks come in male and female versions. You’ve probably seen those huge backpacks that are almost taller than a person—those are typically for men. Of course, if a woman has the strength, she can use one too, but these usually include tents and cooking equipment. For simpler trips, like hiking in Beijing’s Fragrant Hills, a small, lightweight backpack is sufficient. Just pack a water bottle, some light medication, and sunscreen. The key isn’t how much it can carry, but how well it suits your needs. I often suggest choosing bright-colored backpacks for safety reasons. A highly visible backpack helps others spot you in case of emergencies, possibly even becoming a lifesaver. That’s why I advise against dull colors—go for bright ones like red or yellow.
