Entering May, the peak tourist season in Tibet is about to arrive, and Tibet travel is starting to heat up, with the number of domestic and international travelers to Tibet continuously rising. What are the things to keep in mind when traveling to Tibet? A reporter conducted interviews and compiled the information.

Upon first arriving in Tibet, most people will experience varying degrees of shortness of breath, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and other symptoms of oxygen deficiency. But this does not mean you can’t adapt to the high-altitude environment. If you can protect yourself properly, the above symptoms generally improve or disappear after 2–4 days.

If you reach the plateau by plane, symptoms of altitude sickness usually appear within 12–14 hours. Therefore, when you first arrive at the plateau, be sure to avoid strenuous exercise and instead rest in bed.

People often use oxygen inhalation to relieve chest discomfort. Inhaling oxygen can temporarily alleviate symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing, but once you stop, the symptoms reappear, delaying your adaptation to the high-altitude environment. If the oxygen deficiency symptoms are not very severe, it is recommended that you avoid using oxygen if possible, as this can speed up your adaptation. Mild altitude sickness can heal on its own—don’t resort to oxygen too readily to avoid developing a dependency.

After arriving in Tibet, eat more carbohydrates and easily digestible foods; drink plenty of water to maintain adequate hydration; avoid overeating at dinner; it’s best not to drink alcohol or smoke; consume more fruits, vegetables, and other vitamin-rich foods.

Be mindful to avoid excessive fatigue and maintain regular eating and sleeping habits. During the first few days at high altitude, don’t take frequent showers to avoid catching a cold due to getting chilled. Colds are often a major trigger for acute high-altitude pulmonary edema (which is difficult to cure in a state of oxygen deficiency).

During your stay in Tibet, try not to overexert yourself with too many tourist activities or physical strain. When you first arrive at high altitude, do not walk quickly, let alone run or engage in strenuous labor. After one week, you can gradually increase your activity level.

It is essential to note that if, after entering the plateau, your symptoms progressively worsen—especially if they remain obvious even at rest—you should immediately use oxygen and seek medical attention. Rare cases of high-altitude pulmonary edema and high-altitude cerebral edema require large amounts of oxygen, along with medication, and patients must be quickly transferred to lower-altitude areas.

Those who consistently exercise and have good physical fitness may experience minimal altitude sickness and recover quickly. However, don’t become careless or overconfident. Especially before ascending to a new altitude, allow for one or two days of gradual acclimatization. Without proper adaptation and preparation, do not suddenly enter areas above 5,000 meters in altitude to avoid unforeseen risks.

In short, regardless of age, gender, or physical strength, maintaining a healthy and optimistic mindset is crucial. As long as you follow the above points, you will quickly overcome the challenges of altitude sickness after arriving in Tibet.
