It is often said that if you're feeling stressed, going for a walk in a natural outdoor environment, breathing fresh air, and meeting some friends can help relieve pressure. A recent study provides evidence to support this.

Researchers from the University of Michigan and other institutions analyzed the health conditions of 1,991 members of the UK-based group "Walking for Health." The results showed that group outdoor walking can significantly reduce the risk of depression, help alleviate stress, and benefit mental health.

The findings, published in the latest issue of the journal *Ecopsychology*, revealed that individuals who had experienced distressing events such as serious illness, loss of a loved one, marital breakdown, or unemployment showed noticeable improvements in mood after participating in outdoor walks.

Sarah Warber, associate professor at the University of Michigan and a participant in the study, said: "Walking is a low-cost, low-risk, and convenient form of exercise, and it is also a powerful antidote to stress."

Their research indicates that participating in outdoor walking not only provides positive energy for daily life but also offers a non-pharmacological treatment approach for people with severe mental illnesses, such as depression.

Warber noted that the number of people suffering from mental illnesses is increasing in developed countries, and many lack physical activity. Therefore, researchers are actively exploring methods to help improve long-term quality of life and health. Participating in group outdoor walks is one such activity that can help people overcome negative emotions and enhance public health.
