◆Changhua Lukang - Osmanthus Lane Art Village
Address of Osmanthus Lane Art Village: No. 7, Osmanthus Lane, Lukang Township, Changhua County
As someone who has always admired Japanese architecture, I visited the historic Lukang Old Street. Nearby, there’s an area that feels just like Japan—traditional Japanese wooden houses, stone lanterns lining the alleys, all exuding a strong northern atmosphere.
The unique ‘Osmanthus Lane Art Village’ in Lukang is truly one of a kind in all of Changhua County. Originally, it was a cluster of long-abandoned Japanese dormitories (built during the Showa period of Japanese rule). In 2009, with funding from the Changhua County Government, the site was restored, giving it new life. Since the first group of artists moved in starting May 2015, the village has become a new tourist attraction in Changhua, drawing more visitors to Lukang who can also enjoy this artistic beauty. The art village offers a wide range of exhibitions, performances, and hands-on experiences, allowing visitors to get up close with artisans and even try DIY activities to create their own artworks. However, it was quite early when I arrived, so many craft workshops were not yet open, which was a bit of a pity. The first group of artists to occupy Osmanthus Lane Art Village included nine studios specializing in wood carving, lion head crafts, paper cutting, and traditional women’s embroidery. If the event is well-received, there will likely be second and third editions in the future, continuing on.
Osmanthus trees line both sides of the lane, filling the air with the fragrance of osmanthus—hence the name of the place. With its rich traditional crafts and historical architecture, it has become one of Lukang’s important cultural assets. The retro Japanese buildings, clusters of osmanthus trees, and charming installations make it a perfect spot—if you wear a yukata or kimono while strolling here, it will definitely feel very atmospheric.
With its strong Japanese vibe, the romance of a literary forest, and a tranquil, cozy atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to relax, daydream, and unwind on a lazy afternoon.
