As you all know, our family tries our best to limit the kids' screen time. So apart from class hours, mom has to get really creative to keep Robbie entertained even at home, so he won’t get bored and resort to a “screen nanny” for company.
Ever since he outgrew the phase of putting everything in his mouth, my favorite activity with him has been playing with clay and LEGO. A child’s creativity often runs wild during play, and through sensory experiences and the coordination of various abilities, he gets to freely explore the many new things in life, big or small.

Not long ago, I made non-toxic DIY clay at home, which kept Robbie fascinated for quite a while. Then a friend recommended the well-known Swedish Kinetic Sand to me. Also called “clay sand,” its specialty is that it has the looseness of sand and the cohesion of clay. When you grab it forcefully, it scatters, but when you pinch it, it can stick together like clay. It doesn’t stick to your hands, is easy to clean, and allows you to easily shape what seems like loose sand. The 1KG pack wasn’t enough for play, but the 5KG pack was too expensive—too pricey to risk the kids not liking it—so I kept putting off buying it.
Recently, I found out that kinetic sand had actually made an appearance at Robbie’s school, and the kids couldn’t get enough of it. They took out all kinds of shaping tools, cups, buckets, and shovels, and focused intently on creating/stacking all sorts of shapes. At the same time, it helps train hand-eye coordination and strengthens tiny finger muscles through actions like kneading, grabbing, pressing, pinching, patting, and slapping.
After asking around, I found out that the teachers had actually made it themselves. With the curiosity of a little explorer, I finally got my hands on this fun recipe, and tried making it at home right away. I was so proud I felt like screaming—it was so simple and so much fun!!!

1. Commercially packaged fine sand 1750g*
2. Cornstarch 150g
3. Dishwashing liquid 2 teaspoons
4. Water 160cc
◎ Why must you choose packaged fine sand? Of course, if you’re at the beach or passing by a construction site, you could just bring some sand home. But because sand from outside tends to be dirty, I prefer to buy commercially packaged sand—the finer, the better.
◎ Someone asked me online if cat litter can be used. I haven’t tried it, but generally, cat litter hardens when it comes into contact with liquid, so it doesn’t seem very suitable. Interested friends can give it a try though.
◎ Since this is homemade kinetic sand, it can dry out easily if not sealed properly. However, you can add water and cornstarch again to reuse it.
◎ Suggestion: You can add 1 teaspoon of tea tree essential oil or diluted bleach (10:1 ratio). This not only has antibacterial effects but also helps prevent damp sand from developing odors or getting moldy.DIY Kinetic Sand: Help Your Kids Break Free from Screen Addiction Easily!

1. Mix and stir the sand and cornstarch until there are no lumps.

2. Pour the dishwashing liquid into the water and stir until dissolved.
3. Pour the liquid from step 2 into the sand and cornstarch mixture from step 1, and mix thoroughly with your hands or a spoon until evenly combined. Done.

Because the humidity of each bag of sand—or sand obtained elsewhere—varies, the final consistency will be greatly affected. It is recommended to add water gradually, stirring and testing the texture as you go. If it accidentally becomes too wet, you can use a hairdryer to dry it, let it air-dry indoors, or add more cornstarch and sand. Conversely, if it’s too dry, simply add more water. Also, be sure to seal it tightly after use. The finished kinetic sand has good cohesion and can be shaped using cupcake molds or various other molds.

Later, I personally tried store-bought kinetic sand at the mall. In fact, real kinetic sand is made from silica (a mixture of sand and silicone), giving it an extremely smooth texture and the ability to never dry out. But homemade kinetic sand varies in coarseness depending on the brand you buy, and it will still dry out over time as the moisture evaporates (you can add more water). So storage requires careful sealing.
