The Lunar New Year is coming soon, and we’ve been looking for a fitting festive decoration for our front door. Either we couldn’t find one we liked, or the ones we did like were too expensive. So Ah Mu’s DIY spirit was ignited once again, hehe~ With simple preparation and steps, we completed this string of “Hou Sai Lei Firecrackers.” Aren’t they cute and festive?
Tools: Scissors, foam tape, double-sided tape, markers (for drawing the firecrackers)
Materials: Old CDs, felt fabric, red envelopes, gold tape, gold wire, googly eyes
%? Gold wire can also be replaced with regular wire, pipe cleaners, or threaded needles—as long as it can string and secure the firecrackers

%? First, use a CD to trace a circle on dark brown felt fabric, then cut out the drawn circle
%? Next, draw a monkey’s face and ears on light brown felt fabric and cut them out
%? Tie gold wire around the CD (to be used later to connect the firecrackers)
%? Stick the ears onto the appropriate positions on the CD, then attach the monkey’s head and face
%? After attaching the eyes, even little girls can tell it’s a monkey—I’m a little monkey!
We have lots of red envelopes at home, and you don’t necessarily have to use plain ones—ones with patterns work just as well.
%? Cut open the red envelope and stick gold tape along the longer side
%? Fold the red envelope into three equal parts (you can adjust according to how thick you want the firecracker to be), then cut into three equal sections
%? Flip the cut sections to the back, and on the back side where there’s no gold tape, apply double-sided tape
%? Use a marker to roll up the red envelope sections. The number needed can be adjusted based on your desired firecracker length—Ah Mu used 27 in total for the final product
%? String the individual firecrackers together using gold wire. Once strung, hook the top wire with the reserved wire on the CD, and secure the bottom wire to hold the firecrackers in place
%? The firecrackers are done, Up, and let Ah Mu’s little model show them off for everyone XD. Aren’t they super cute? The little model is totally professional, haha
%? Hang them at your front door—unique and festive
