The Taoyuan Calla Lily Festival has been a significant tourism highlight in Taoyuan in recent years and also represents an effort to transition toward refined sightseeing agriculture. The floral season typically runs from early spring—January to April—when calla lilies and fragrant lilies bloom abundantly in the Dayuan District of Taoyuan. The Taoyuan government hopes to leverage the Calla Lily Festival to integrate local specialty industries and culture, aiding in the agricultural transformation of the area.
The 2018 Taoyuan Calla Lily Festival was themed “Lovers’ Paradise, Happy Taoyuan,” creating a stunning sea of flowers. In addition to flower viewing, visitors could also attend lectures and DIY pastry activities. The festival was further combined with small-scale farms and the Longtan Lianlienzihua (Love Lupine) Festival to offer related tour packages. Below, let’s take a look at what highlights the 2018 Calla Lily Festival had to offer!

How to Select Calla Lilies
If the weather is hot, the vase life of calla lilies becomes shorter. Therefore, it’s best to choose flowers with 3–5 blooms before mid-April, and change the water daily to maintain freshness for about 10 days. After mid-April, opt for flowers with 5 blooms, which can last around 3–5 days with daily water changes.
How to Care for Calla Lilies
Change the water every day, and trim 1–2 cm off the base of the calla lily stem. You can also use floral preservative in the water to extend freshness. Be sure to place the flowers in a cool spot. If it’s too warm, adding a few ice cubes can help keep your calla lilies cool!
Harvesting Calla Lilies
Grip the stem of the calla lily firmly with your hand in a tiger’s mouth grip (overhand grasp), and position the lily behind your body to avoid injuring yourself or the flower during harvest. When you hear a “pop” sound as you pull it out, you’ve done it right!
