A spectacular wisteria waterfall that rivals the fame of Ashikaga Park at Japan’s Great Wisteria Festival

When thinking of viewing wisteria seas in Japan, besides the renowned Ashikaga Flower Park, the Kurogi Great Wisteria Festival in Fukuoka is also a famous spot for wisteria lovers. The Kurogi Great Wisteria tree is over 600 years old and has been designated as a Japanese national natural monument, blooming every year from late April to early May.

Legend has it that the Kurogi Great Wisteria was planted in 1395 by Prince Narisue, the Later Saionji General. Having survived numerous wars for over 620 years, this grand wisteria still thrives vigorously today and is now widely known across Japan as the “Longevity Wisteria.”

The Kurogi Great Wisteria, planted at Susanoo Shrine, spans a trellis of about 3,000 square meters. It blooms around mid-April each year, creating a breathtaking sight with over 1.5-meter-long purple flower clusters hanging down.
