As slow food travel gains popularity, when slowness becomes a way of life and gourmet cuisine evolves into a form of lifestyle aesthetics, eating is no longer just about filling one's stomach. When this slow food movement crosses the Xueshan Tunnel and reaches the simple and unadorned Yilan Plain, the expansive blue sky and lush green rice fields create a dining environment that encourages you to freely engage your senses and appreciate the simplest forms of beauty.
The unique culture, climate, and land of Yilan have not only accumulated a rich humanistic charm but also given rise to a series of vibrant Yilan vernacular houses. From farmsteads nestled in rural fields to the Xitou Household Registration Office, which takes “mountain” as its design concept, the scenery transforms with every step. Hidden among the fields of Zhuangwei in Yilan, the “Crown Jewel” leaves a striking first impression—the furniture, bricks, tiles, and utensils in the space are all carefully collected treasures, invested with both money and heart by the owner.
The Crown Jewel embodies a visual language between objects, much like how aged items, having endured the passage of time, exude vitality and spirit. This unique sentiment is similarly reflected in the restaurant’s kaiseki cuisine. The establishment insists on using seasonal, fresh ingredients, which are meticulously prepared and served on plates crafted by local ceramic artists, turning cooking into an art form. This allows diners to not only enjoy delicious flavors but also experience pleasing visual satisfaction.
Dining at the Crown Jewel offers a strong sense of temporal dislocation—it doesn’t feel like being in a private club in Taipei or a Kyoto yG garden. Looking up, you see fields of rice stalks; the sashimi dishware is repurposed from ancient Fujian incense offering boxes; the tea cups are deeply evocative. Each pairing of dishware and dish resembles a beautiful painting. Unlike the ambiance of typical restaurants, the second floor of the Crown Jewel also features a spiritually uplifting tea room. The spacious area is divided by bamboo mats, and as you move along the pathway, you’re successively greeted by ceramics, a tea setting, Buddha statues, odd rocks, candle holders, and calligraphy by Rinpoche.
The Crown Jewel sees itself as a window to global cuisine. To make the most of in-season fresh ingredients, it imports fresh scallops from Hokkaido, French spring chicken, Australian live abalone, German rice noodles, and other materials, combined with fresh seafood from Donggang and golden oysters from Fengbin Township. A magnificent seasonal kaiseki feast is held here every day. Against the backdrop of sturdy dark ceramic plates and rich ingredients, you can even better appreciate the serene, moonlit elegance of the Yilan Plain.
