Wander through a dazzling ensemble of world heritage sites as Macau’s “Mandarin’s House” opens to the public

Since 2005, when China’s 31st world heritage site was officially designated, the “Historic Centre of Macao” has become a radiant collection of world heritage. This historic area, blending Chinese and Portuguese cultures, features China’s best-preserved oldest Western architecture, the oldest lighthouse in the Far East, Renaissance-era churches, and traditional Chinese mansions incorporating Western craftsmanship. The Mandarin’s House, completed in 1881, is the ancestral home of Zheng Guanying, a renowned modern Chinese thinker. After more than eight years of planning and restoration, it began limited public visits in February this year.

The Mandarin’s House exhibits distinct characteristics of traditional Cantonese residences while also featuring Western architectural elements, making it a typical example of Lingnan architectural style. This complex, covering nearly 4,000 square meters, consists of two parallel siheyuan (courtyard) buildings, servant quarters connected to the inner courtyard, and the main gate. Through the details of the house’s restoration, strolling through it allows visitors to imagine Zheng Guanying diligently penning his influential work “Words of Warning in a Prosperous Age” here. Plans are also underway to establish an exhibition hall on Zheng Guanying’s life and a cultural history archive.

The Mandarin’s House is located at No. 10, Long Tou Zuo Hong, Macau, opposite Albergue 1601 Square. It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and admission is free. For cultural preservation and safety reasons, only 100 visitors are allowed in at a time. The ground floor of the Yuqing Hall, the upstairs hall, and the ground floor of the Jishan Hall each accommodate a maximum of 20 people. In addition to the reopening of the Mandarin’s House, another new attraction in Macau, the “Macau Science Museum,” officially opened this year. Situated on the southern coast of the Macau Peninsula, the Macau Science Museum was designed by the renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. The overall structure covers approximately 20,000 square meters and includes three main sections: the exhibition center shaped like an inclined cone, the hemispherical planetarium, and the conference center.

The exhibition center houses 14 galleries with 450 interactive exhibits. The 12 permanent galleries cover themes such as space science, children’s paradise, children’s science, science express, robotics, science exploration, Earth, meteorology, environmental protection, sports and health, sports competition, and food science; the other two are thematic exhibition halls with rotating displays. At the center of the planetarium is an approximately 15.24-meter-diameter tilted hemispherical screen equipped with 12 high-resolution digital projectors capable of showing both standard and 3D dome films. The planetarium’s vast database and projection effects allow audiences to freely explore the universe. With special eyewear, visitors can even experience 3D projections on the massive domed screen.

The Macau Science Museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Thursdays. Admission to the exhibition center is 25 Macanese patacas per person, and 3D shows in the planetarium cost 45 patacas per person. Macau also boasts numerous theme museums and exhibition halls, making it a great destination for family outings or knowledge exploration.
