The Keukenhof Flower Exhibition in the Netherlands is one of Europe’s most renowned events. The Dutch name “Keukenhof” comes from “Keuken,” meaning kitchen, and “hof,” meaning garden. This name originates from the period between 1401 and 1436 when the land was owned by Countess Jacoba, and the garden was planted with herbs and vegetables for the kitchen. Later, under the design of German landscape artists, the area was transformed into a large outdoor garden, hosting its first outdoor flower exhibition. Since then, it has become hugely popular as an annual spring event.

Today, this world-famous garden boasts around 70 to 80 million plants, primarily featuring various species of tulips. The optimal blooming period is from late March to May each year. In addition to tulips, the park also showcases hundreds of varieties of daffodils and hyacinths. With its ingeniously designed gardens, vibrant seas of flowers, and murmuring lakes and streams, visitors feel as if they’ve stepped into a fairyland. The approximately two-month flowering season attracts large numbers of tourists from far and wide to witness this spectacular display of blooms.

This year, the Keukenhof Tulip Park is open from March 18 to May 16. The exhibition area is divided into indoor flower houses and outdoor themed flower gardens. All the themed displays are masterpieces carefully crafted by Dutch growers from across the country. With flowing water, fountains, garden landscapes, modern sculptures, and swans and ducks playing in the waterways, the entire garden is shaped into a beautiful paradise. Before entering this vast 80-acre garden, it’s recommended to purchase a garden guide at the entrance to avoid getting lost or missing attractions. Generally, a visit to Keukenhof takes about five hours. In addition to dining at the park’s restaurants, you might also consider bringing your own food for a picnic amidst the flowers and enjoy the romance of spring.
