Taipei in Bloom: Top 12 District Flowers Announced
Is your favorite district flower on the list? Organized by the Taipei City Government’s Department of Civil Affairs, the “District Flower Online Voting” campaign, after a month of enthusiastic public participation, has finally revealed the 12 district flowers representing each administrative area. Hibiscus, kapok, camellia, white peony, apricot blossom, rose, cherry blossom, melastoma, cosmos, moth orchid, osmanthus, and bougainvillea together symbolize the unique character of each district. They will also showcase the distinct charm of “one district, one feature” at the “2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition.”

To welcome the “2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition,” the Taipei City Government called on all citizens to join in creating a beautiful garden city and participate in the “Taipei, the Flower Capital” District Flower Voting Campaign. Songshan District took the crown with hibiscus, whose floral language represents “strong vitality”; Zhongzheng District’s kapok was chosen for the vibrant beauty of life it showcases as the striking trees bloom brilliantly along Roosevelt Road in spring; the camellia, known for its resilience in harsh conditions, mirrors the hardworking and tenacious spirit of Datong District’s early settlers.
The white peony, with its floral meaning of “young girl’s sentiment”—profound yet not overly sentimental—was selected to represent Wanhua District for reflecting the area’s early, fresh local charm; Xinyi District residents overwhelmingly chose the apricot blossom, symbolizing the beauty of spring and, because the Chinese word for apricot sounds like “happiness” (幸), it became the district flower of Wenshan District; Shilin District is home to numerous beautiful roses planted in the Shilin Official Residence, making visitors eager to admire these gorgeous, fragrant, and noble flowers; Beitou District, having successfully promoted its cherry blossom trails over the years, saw its cherry blossoms win by a landslide as crowds flock to admire their beauty when they bloom each year.

Together with the seven districts whose flowers were voted on, plus the five districts that already had designated flowers (Xinyi District - melastoma, Da’an District - cosmos, Zhongshan District - moth orchid, Nangang District - osmanthus, Neihu District - bougainvillea), all 12 district flowers are now complete, coming together to cheer for the highly anticipated annual event, the “2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition.” The grand prize of a Nissan TIIDA car from the “Taipei, the Flower Capital” District Flower Voting Campaign has been drawn, and other prizes will be announced on the campaign’s official website.
