The fragrant Alishan Taro and Bamboo Shoot Festival is here—come discover a taste of happiness.

This year’s festival theme is “Lucky Ten: Discover Happiness.” Highlights include vibrant cultural performances, a taro ice-eating contest, a bamboo shoot peeling race, and fun challenge games. There will also be limited free servings of taro-flavored ice cream and taro ball soup. Visitors can join DIY dream-painting activities, ensuring a day full of delicious food, fun activities, and great giveaways.

During the event on June 26 and 27, all Alishan residents will be mobilized to celebrate the “Double Joy Festival,” sharing their wedding-like happiness with all visitors. Alishan’s famous red betel-heart taro is well known for its resemblance to betel nuts, but with a red, radial fiber core inside. Its dense and hearty texture offers a satisfyingly crisp bite, making it a must-buy local specialty. The township has also prepared signature gifts, including the renowned taro ice, taro cakes, taro strip crisps, fresh bamboo shoots, pickled bamboo shoot strips, crispy bamboo shoots, plum vinegar, and plum wine—so visitors can enjoy the freshest and most delightful flavors while joining in the fun.

Additionally, the Alishan Bridge, which was damaged during the typhoon, is set to reopen at the end of June. The rebuilt bridge features a purple hue inspired by Alishan taro, with design motifs incorporating local agricultural products like taro and bamboo shoots. Once completed, it will become a new landmark for Alishan, combining functionality with scenic beauty. Visitors will be able to enjoy LED lights on the bridge that change with the seasons and holidays. Those visiting Alishan in the future should witness the town’s growth and experience the new charm of this mountain township.
