The Weather Vane Rooster from Fairy Tales:: The Weathercock House:: Kobe
In ancient fairy tales, there's always that memorable weather vane rooster on the rooftop, spinning in the wind. Thus, this red weathercock has become an important landmark in the Kobe area. The Weathercock House is one of the Western-style houses in Kitano, once a filming location for an NHK Japanese drama, and also the most popular building—many visitors and photographers love taking pictures here.

The Weathercock House was built in 1909 by German merchant Thomas. It features a red brick exterior and a pointed roof, exuding a 19th-century German architectural vibe. The interior furnishings include preserved furniture from that era, with uniquely designed dining rooms, bedrooms, and living areas. The children’s room contains numerous German dolls that once belonged to the former mistress when she was young—now antiques with great value.

In the square of the Weathercock House, there are many bronze sculptures of people playing instruments—such as an old man playing the saxophone, musicians playing the flute and trumpet, and cats. The golden statues glisten under the sunlight, offering an exotic charm that's a favorite spot for photos.
The weather vane on the roof not only serves to detect wind direction; in traditional Western beliefs, it also symbolizes warding off evil spirits and enhancing Christian influence. This iconic feature is one reason why the Weathercock House remains so popular.
