At 8:30 p.m. on March 26, the Presidential Office and Taipei 101 will turn off their lights on time, as Taiwan prays for the Earth with starlight. This year, the Wilderness Conservation Association has once again partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the "2011 Earth Hour," joining over 130 countries and 750 iconic landmarks around the globe in turning off lights for one hour. The Society of Wilderness has called on people across Taiwan to turn off their lights for seven consecutive years. Previous summer Earth Hour actions have helped the public develop the habit of turning off lights annually. This year, they continue to invite everyone to voluntarily spend a low-carbon hour together on March 26 at 8:30 p.m. Taipei 101 Chairman Lin Hong-ming said: “Taipei 101 has actively supported Earth Hour since 2009, and this year we will also turn off the building’s exterior lighting and encourage tenants to participate. We estimate that turning off the lights for one hour will save about NT$10,005 in electricity costs.”

The lights-off campaign originated in Australia. Tomorrow, world-famous landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, and the Statue of Liberty will also respond by turning off their lights for an hour. This year, 130 countries and over 3,700 cities worldwide are taking part. Notable buildings, government agencies, schools, businesses, and hotels across Taiwan will also turn off their lights simultaneously in the evening. In addition, starting from March 26, The Society of Wilderness will publicly solicit “Green Homeland Blueprints” from communities and offer a series of free environmental protection lectures to foster a shared commitment to protecting the environment.
