The Thai Legend of Wat Huay Mongkol

Buddhism is deeply rooted in Thai culture, and the country has many legendary tales of the Buddha and eminent monks. Among them, the revered "Luang Por Thuat" remains highly respected by the Thai people to this day. It is believed that sincerely praying to the esteemed monk can make one’s wishes come true, which explains why Wat Huay Mongkol, a temple located in the suburbs of Hua Hin, has seen continuous throngs of worshippers over the years.

 

 

Originally, Wat Huay Mongkol was just a simple wooden structure for Buddhist monks. It was later renovated by the first abbot and was initially named “Wat Huay Kot.” It was subsequently renamed “Wat Huay Mongkol” by King Rama IX of Thailand. The temple enshrines Luang Por Thuat, the most influential monk in Thailand. Although he attained nirvana long ago, stories of his spiritual appearances continue to this day. The unveiling of the massive statue of Luang Por Thuat at Wat Huay Mongkol was even attended by the Queen of Thailand herself, reflecting the profound reverence and devotion the Thai people hold for their enlightened monks.

When worshipping at a Thai temple, it is customary to prepare offerings such as incense, flowers, and gold leaf. The worship process involves circumambulating the large Buddha statue clockwise three times before presenting the offerings. Gold leaf is mainly used to adorn the Buddha statues. Once a statue is completely covered in gold leaf, the sheets are removed and crafted into gold bracelets, which are then blessed and sold to the public. These bracelets are believed not only to bring safety and good fortune but also hold value as an investment.
