Rising as an Asian cycling city, Kaohsiung builds its second bicycle bridge

With growing public awareness of healthy cycling and increasingly comprehensive bike lane infrastructure across cities and counties, Kaohsiung City has announced the construction of its second elevated bicycle corridor — a bicycle bridge over Zhongshan 4th Road at Kaisyuan 4th Road. A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday, with completion expected by September next year. The project will provide the public with a more convenient and safer bicycle network.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu stated that the Greater Kaohsiung area currently has around 500 kilometers of bicycle lanes. Not only is it the first city in Taiwan to build a bicycle bridge, but it has also been recognized by international media CNN as one of Asia’s top five cycling cities. Following the completion of the first bicycle bridge on Zuoying’s Cuihua Road, the second “Zhongshan 4th Road over Kaisyuan 4th Road Bicycle Bridge” will now begin construction, further enhancing safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.
 

The Zhongshan 4th Road over Kaisyuan 4th Road Bicycle Bridge will feature a steel structure design, spanning a total length of 360 meters. Once completed, it will connect to Beauty Island Boulevard to the north, link to the Cuiheng North-South Road MRT commuting route to the south, and integrate with the east-west Harborfront Bicycle Scenic Corridors. Additionally, a dedicated pedestrian sky garden will be built within the central green belt of Kaisyuan Road, with the overall design inspired by the fairy tale character Jack and the Beanstalk, adding greener and more beautiful surroundings.
