Uniquely shaped cube houses, Kijk-Kubus in the Netherlands

Modern architecture not only showcases the boundless creativity of designers, but its unique forms can also offer a refreshing experience. In the Netherlands, there is a building designed around the concept of large cubes—Kijk-Kubus—which became an instant attraction upon opening, drawing travelers from all over. Even a youth hostel has set up shop here, making it a popular choice for backpackers.

The cube houses are arguably the most iconic example of modern architecture in the Netherlands. Designed by Piet Blom between 1978 and 1984, the entire community consists of 51 cube units built on a single platform that spans across Blaak Boulevard, forming a unique “tunnel.” Each cube house features a large, tilted square cube, interconnected with others, with each cube serving as either a residence or office unit. Between the elevated cubes are columns that house various shops and restaurants, offering complete functionality.

For those curious about the cube houses, it’s hard to imagine the interior design just by looking at the exterior, sparking curiosity about how the space inside is arranged. That’s why one unit was preserved during construction as a showroom. Stepping inside, you’ll find it’s not much different from a typical home, except that the decor adds warm, soft elements that make the space more comfortable.

Each cube has three floors: the first floor contains the living room and kitchen, the second floor—with the most spacious floor area—houses the study and bedroom, while the top floor utilizes the pointed corner to create a well-lit living area. The tilted cubes result in somewhat narrow flooring and ceiling spaces, which might be inconvenient for taller individuals, but the spacious central sections greatly increase storage capacity.
