Miaoli’s Sanyi Revives Heritage Railway to Boost Scenic Town Tourism

Nominated for “Taiwan’s Top Ten Scenic Small Towns” with its focus on woodcarving art, Sanyi will resume old mountain line train services every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from today through April 19 to encourage locals and tourists to “ride the train, explore Sanyi,” and cast their votes for the town.

Beloved by both domestic and international travelers, the old mountain line departs from Sanyi Station and takes passengers past Taiwan’s highest railway point at Shengxing Station and the historic Longteng Broken Bridge. The route passes through seven tunnels, three railway bridges, and the scenic Lianhuatan Reservoir, before crossing the Dajia River to reach Taichung’s Old Tai’an Station. The entire journey offers rich natural and cultural landscapes.

In conjunction with the Taiwan Top Ten Scenic Small Towns selection campaign, passengers who ride the old mountain line tourist train and fill out a postcard ballot can receive a set of Miaoli travel scenic postcards. Additionally, each trip of the old mountain line diesel-powered tourist train will sell 180 seated tickets (bookable via Taiwan Railways’ phone reservation system or online), priced at NT$100 for adults and NT$50 for concessionary fares. Each trip also includes 60 standing tickets, available only on the day of travel at Sanyi Station from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
