The Ancient City Water Battle Gathers Good Luck at Thailand’s Songkran Festival on April 6

The annual Thailand Songkran Festival, which attracts numerous tourists from around the world, will take place from April 6 to 28 in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, and other locations. Visitors from all over the globe are welcome to join in the joy of Thailand’s traditional New Year.

The Thai Songkran Festival (also known as the Songkran Festival or Thai New Year) is the most joyful traditional New Year celebration for Thai people. The word “Songkran,” derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “passage,” signifies moving into a new astrological phase and welcoming the new year. During this period, Thais living abroad return home to reunite with their families, highlighting the festival’s deep cultural significance. Although Thailand’s official New Year has since been moved to January 1, people still honor this ancient tradition. To this day, in the hottest month of April, locals splash water on one another as a symbol of blessings—washing away the misfortunes of the past year and collecting good luck for the year ahead, while also cooling off during the peak heat of summer.

During this time, the entire Khao San Road, a favorite spot among backpackers in Bangkok, is filled with joyful scenes of locals and foreigners drenching each other with water. In Chiang Mai’s Old City, eye-catching parades and trucks packed with people drive around spraying water guns at other vehicles and pedestrians, creating a wild and festive atmosphere akin to the lively water-splashing on rafting trips along the Shouliu River. The main celebrations in Ayutthaya take place at the ancient city of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Wat Phra Mongkhon Bophit, and the surrounding areas of the Ayutthaya Province. People dress in traditional Thai attire to offer food to monks at temples, pray for blessings, and pour scented water on the palms of elders. There are also decorated elephants joining in the water festivities, offering a deeper experience of local culture.
