The annual highlight of original music—the Gongliao International Ocean Music Festival—is set to take place from July 11 to 15 in the year 101 (2012)! The New Taipei City Government announced today (the 21st) the list of preliminary qualifiers for the competition category “Ocean Independent Music Grand Prix.” After intense evaluation among 222 participating groups, a total of 30 bands have qualified for the next round. Three advance showcase events will be held soon at Golden Waterfront Plaza (next to Tamsui MRT Station) on May 26, Bali Left Bank Hall on June 2, and Fragrant Promenade Plaza (in front of A11 Building of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi Store) on June 9.

Among the 30 bands admitted this year are “Fear of Fat Band,” which won the Ocean Star Award in 2008, “Ding Ding & Xi Xi,” who have been finalists before, as well as “Slime Band,” led by CTS news anchor Zhuang Yujie, which garnered much attention last year. Also included is the new combination of indie singer “Richie Jen & Slow Talker,” who have previously released albums. The diverse and creative lineup showcases the significance and influence of the Ocean Grand Prix within the independent music scene. Judges noted that the overall performance level of this year’s bands is exceptionally high, with many almost ready to release their own albums—a truly impressive feat.

Held annually since 2000, the Gongliao Ocean Music Festival is now in its 13th edition. Among its events, the “Ocean Independent Music Grand Prix” music competition was first launched in 2001 and has cultivated numerous talented independent bands over the years. From the three advance showcase events, 10 bands will be selected to compete in the final round of the “Ocean Independent Music Grand Prix” during the Ocean Music Festival on July 14, vying for prizes including the Ocean Independent Music Grand Prix, the Jury Grand Prize, and the Ocean Star Audience Choice Award. Notably, this year the organizers will bring the winning bands of the Ocean Independent Music Grand Prix to perform and exchange at internationally renowned music festivals such as the MIDI Festival in Beijing and the Clockenflap in Hong Kong. This not only broadens the global perspective of the Ocean Music Festival but also enhances its international reputation.
