Merlion goes glam with a new look for its birthday on 9/15

When it comes to Singapore, the "Lion City," one naturally thinks of the iconic Merlion statue standing proudly by the Singapore River. Since 1972, the Merlion has watched over the city for 40 years, and this year, September 15 will mark its 40th birthday. In celebration, the Merlion will undergo renovation starting now until the end of August and is expected to reopen officially in September. Visitors to Singapore will then get to see a brand-new Merlion statue.

The Merlion statue was crafted from concrete by the late Singaporean master craftsman Lim Nang Seng and has stood quietly at the mouth of the Singapore River for the past 30 years, guarding the ships coming and going at sea. Following urban redevelopment in 2002, the Merlion was relocated to a new site about 120 meters from its original location. The new site spans 2,500 square meters—four times larger than the old one across the bridge—and in addition to a specially designed lighting system, the park includes viewing platforms, event spaces, and a water taxi dock, offering convenience for visitors.

During the renovation period, renowned illustrator Elaine Chan will create whimsical murals on the exterior construction walls, depicting the Merlion taking a vacation, visiting the zoo, and the Jurong Bird Park. These murals are expected to be completed and go on public display starting July 5.

In celebration of the Merlion’s 40th birthday, the Singapore Tourism Board is also hosting various events. Travelers from around the world can share their personal stories and travel experiences with the Merlion through photos or text on a dedicated website. Additionally, from September 12 to 16, during the Merlion’s reopening, a laser light show will be held to welcome global visitors with a fresh new look.
