Located at the intersection of Guam Routes 1 and 4 in Hagåtña, Plaza de España was once the residence of the Spanish governor. The plaza includes buildings such as the governor’s residence, gardens, the Chocolate House, and the Spanish Arch. Today’s Plaza de España, with its lush trees and green lawns, has become a beautiful attraction for visitors. In the plaza stands a restored hexagonal small house — the “Chocolate House,” which got its name from being the place where the Spanish governor’s wife invited nobility for afternoon tea and chocolate.

Recommended Must-Visit Attraction: Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral

Next to Plaza de España, Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral attracts attention with its tall white structure and serves as a landmark of Hagåtña. It was originally built on the site of Guam’s first Catholic church (founded by Father Diego Luis de San Vitores in 1669), but after being destroyed by war and natural disasters, the current cathedral was rebuilt in 1958.

The legend behind Two Lovers Point tells of a beautiful Chamorro maiden who fell in love with a young man from her tribe but was promised by her father to a Spanish officer of high status. The maiden and her lover arranged to meet at a cliff in Tumon Bay, tied their hair together as a symbol of eternal unity, and then leapt to their deaths together. Beside the Two Lovers Point plaza is a lovers’ bell, gifted by Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan, where a similar legend is told — it is said that couples who ring the bell together will love each other forever.
