Registration now open for free guided tours of Red Butterflies Dancing over Emerald Ponds and Meishan

April and October are the twin peaks of eco-tourism at Emerald Ponds and Meishan. During April and May, tens of thousands were once drawn to take the metro up the mountain to follow the trail of fireflies; starting in October, it’s the peak season for black-veined tiger butterflies, also known as red butterflies. In response, the Taiwan Natural Technology Society not only provides professional guides for on-site interpretation, but will also host the “Red Butterflies Frolic in the Valley” event at 9:00 AM on October 20th at Starlight Grassland. The event includes a butterfly ecology art exhibition and an exploration of exclusive forest trails, all free of charge.

Volunteers from the Taiwan Natural Technology Society have been planting host and nectar plants for red butterflies, such as Taiwan clematis and Eupatorium tashiroi, on Meishan for two years, attracting numerous red butterflies and creating the stunning “Red Butterflies Valley.” From October each year, Meishan becomes lively with fluttering butterflies, transforming into an ecologically rich hotspot that draws many domestic and international visitors.

The event will run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on October 20th. The butterfly ecology art exhibition will feature over 30 species of butterfly-rearing potted plants, along with live butterfly larvae and pupae for public viewing. There will also be a conservation exchange session, where participants can learn about ecological preservation through creative nature exhibits, new eco-art, and insights into building butterfly valleys—bringing conservation concepts into everyday life. The forest exploration will guide participants into exclusive wild jungle trails to discover the wonders of nature.

Participants can take the Xindian Line of the Taipei Metro to Xindian Station, then transfer to Green 6 bus to the “Mei-Zhi City” stop. From there, walk up Yongye Road Lane 81 in the community for five minutes to reach the Starlight Grassland on Meishan.
