U.S. Visa Waiver Boosts Hawaii Airlines' Direct Flights to Honolulu

Taipei will become the ninth new destination opened by Hawaiian Airlines in the past two years, and it is also the only airline offering non-stop direct flights from Taipei to Honolulu. The airline will operate this new route using the new Airbus A330-200, providing 294 seats. Cabin services will include authentic Hawaiian cuisine and in-flight meals, with each seat equipped with a high-resolution LCD touchscreen personal entertainment system.

Hawaiian Airlines President and CEO Mark Dunkerley said: “We have always believed that Hawaii is a very attractive travel destination for Taiwan, but the previous inconvenience of the U.S. visa process created a bottleneck for this market. Now that the bottleneck has been removed, we are delighted to add Taipei to Hawaiian Airlines’ continuously expanding Asia-Pacific route network.”
In response to the news of Hawaiian Airlines launching direct passenger flights between Taipei and Honolulu, Mike McCartney, Director of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, stated that Taiwan’s inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, along with Hawaiian Airlines’ new direct flights between Taipei and Honolulu, will double the tourism market from the Asia-Pacific region to Hawaii. The estimated number of visitors from Taiwan to Hawaii in 2012 is about 10,642, and this number is expected to increase significantly after the launch of this route — a trend evidenced by the double-digit growth in tourist numbers from South Korea after it joined the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.
