The High-Speed Rail Winter Camp is Back – Registration Opens December 10

Beyond homework and travel, the highly anticipated Taiwan High-Speed Rail (THSR) Camp, popular among students, is making a comeback this long winter break. THSR will launch a two-day, one-night camp during the 2013 winter vacation, divided into four sessions for elementary, junior high, senior high, and college/university students. The activities include visits to the maintenance base and operations control center, as well as access to a driver’s cab simulator where participants can experience the thrill of driving a high-speed train. Each session accepts 30 regular applicants and 10 alternates, with registration open on the THSR website from December 10 to 17.

According to THSR, the 2013 camp offers participants the chance to learn about the maintenance, operations, and train scheduling of high-speed rail through hands-on experiences and insights shared by THSR maintenance, control center, and service staff. Participants will also get an up-close look at normally off-limits facilities such as the maintenance base and operations control center, providing first-hand knowledge of how high-speed rail is maintained and operated. Additionally, they can experience what it’s like to drive a high-speed train via a driver’s cab simulator. Moreover, THSR has invited several renowned railway experts to share their knowledge about high-speed rail and railways, allowing participants to explore the wonders of rail culture both through activities and in spirit. Elementary and junior high participants will also visit the “Watercock Ecological Education Park” in Guantian District, Tainan City, where they can observe up close the habitat of the watercock, a second-class protected bird species, and catch a glimpse of the “fairy of the waters” gracefully walking across ponds.

 

The 2013 THSR Winter Camp is scheduled for January 22–23 for elementary school students, January 24–25 for junior high students, January 29–30 for senior high/vocational students, and February 5–6 for college/university students. Online registration begins December 10, with computerized lottery draws taking place on December 18 and the announcement of selected and alternate participants on the THSR website on December 19.
