The Alishan Forest Railway Celebrates Its Centennial with Free Rides on Hinoki Wooden Steam Trains

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the reopening and full operation of the Alishan Forest Railway’s plains section, the Chiayi Forest District Office will operate trains between Beimen Station and Zhushan Station from the afternoon of the 23rd to the 25th. On December 23rd and 25th, steam trains will be in service, available for free to the public on a first-come, first-served registration basis. Registration can be made at Beimen Station starting now. On Sunday the 23rd, the Alishan Forest Railway will operate one special event train (Chiayi Depot Park – Beimen Station – Luma Production Area – Zhushan) in coordination with the celebration. On-site registration for boarding will be available at 9:30 AM that day, limited to 120 passengers. At 3:00 PM, a train will depart from Beimen Station to Chiayi Railway Station. The train will consist of “diesel locomotive + steam train + hinoki wooden carriages.” Reservations are required, limited to 200 passengers. On Monday the 24th, trains will run between Beimen Station and Zhushan, with one trip each at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The train configuration will be “diesel locomotive + hinoki wooden carriages.” Reservations are required, limited to 200 passengers per trip. Additionally, at the Chiayi Depot Park, steam trains will perform static whistle demonstrations on the hour from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for photo opportunities. On Tuesday the 25th, in coordination with the event, one train will depart at 9:00 AM on the “Beimen – Luma Production Area – Zhushan” route. Reservations are required, limited to 120 passengers. At 2:00 PM, a train will depart from Beimen Station to Zhushan. The train will consist of “diesel locomotive + steam train + hinoki wooden carriages.” Reservations are required, limited to 200 passengers.

The Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau stated that after December 26th, there will be two train services daily — at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. From Monday to Friday, trains will run between Chiayi and Beimen; on Saturdays and Sundays, they will run between Chiayi and Zhushan. The one-way full fare for Chiayi–Beimen is NT$15, and the half fare is NT$8; for Chiayi–Zhushan, the one-way full fare is NT$40, and the half fare is NT$20.
