Beitou Lisi Hot Spring Hotel claimed first place in the main dish category of Apple Daily’s New Year’s Eve Meal Competition on its very first try, with its “Charcoal-Grilled Eel Rice Cake”! This year’s main dish category featured radish cakes, rice cakes, and savory sponge cakes. One of the judges, renowned food critic Xu Tianlin, said: “The eel is on par with Japanese standards, and the rice cake includes sakura shrimp, squid, and shiitake mushrooms — the seasoning is really well done!”

The Charcoal-Grilled Eel Rice Cake is made with a rich mix of ingredients such as sakura shrimp, squid, and shiitake mushrooms, all thoroughly stir-fried with glutinous rice to infuse flavor, paired with tender, succulent charcoal-grilled eel slow-cooked over low heat. As the only five-star hotel in Beitou that specializes in Taiwanese cuisine, this year Beitou Lisi Hot Spring Hotel’s Yongcui Ting presents New Year’s Eve meals that focus on classic, traditional Taiwanese dishes, while also incorporating some banquet-style culinary elements from the Beitou drinking and dining culture. The goal is for everyone to enjoy a delicious, thoughtfully prepared reunion meal and to forever remember these enduring, treasured flavors. In addition to the championship-winning Charcoal-Grilled Eel Rice Cake, there’s also Lisi’s authentic Taiwanese-style Buddha Jumps Over the Wall. The broth is simmered for one hour using old hen stock with a touch of Shaoxing wine, then combined with premium ingredients such as small shark fin, abalone, tendon, dried scallops, shredded bamboo shoots, taro, chicken thigh meat, pork ribs, pigeon eggs, and more. It is then steamed for another 180 minutes. The dish perfectly showcases the harmonious blend of ingredients, offering a delightful sweetness without a cloudy broth — an astonishingly exquisite version of Buddha Jumps Over the Wall.

The Golden Ingot with Shredded Bamboo Shoots, a symbol of harmony and unity, is a must-eat classic New Year’s dish. Made with locally sourced, freshly slaughtered black-haired pork, it is marinated slowly with a secret recipe of over ten types of Chinese medicinal herbs and red glutinous rice, then braised over low heat. The caramel-colored skin is chewy and smooth without being greasy, and the lean meat is tender yet full of aroma. The crisp shredded bamboo shoots are also perfectly infused with the braising sauce. One bite of the pork knuckle and one of the bamboo shoots bring back nostalgic flavors.
