The National Palace Museum is presenting the "New Era of Collections – A Showcase of Masterpieces in Modern and Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting" from now until April 30 in Exhibition Rooms 105 and 107 of the Main Building. The exhibition displays works by artists from the Beijing-Tianjin area during the modern and contemporary era—a time when China was transitioning from imperial rule to democracy, and when culture and the arts flourished with vitality. The exhibited artworks are rich and diverse in content, fully reflecting the trajectory of historical evolution and serving as a microcosm of the changes during the Republic of China period.

The calligraphy and paintings in the museum's collection were inherited from the Qing imperial household and represent the finest works accumulated by successive dynasties' courts, with exceptional quality and preservation. After the relocation of the Palace Museum’s artifacts to Taiwan with the Nationalist Government in 1949, the collection has continued to expand. In addition to actively acquiring and soliciting calligraphy and painting works, the museum has also received donations from members of the public, collectors, and various institutions. Over the decades, more than 6,000 new pieces of calligraphy and painting have been added to the collection. These newly acquired works include former Qing palace collections that had been scattered among the public, late Ming dynasty loyalist works that were previously underrepresented in the museum’s holdings, as well as 19th- and 20th-century calligraphy and paintings that the museum aimed to expand. These works have significantly broadened the scope of the museum’s original collection and extended its temporal coverage.
