How to photograph fireflies? Photography expert Mei Ling shares her secrets for capturing firefly moments

On the opening day of the 2013 Tainan Mei Ling Firefly Watching Season, 5,000 people participated. During the event period, weekend packages included activities such as hiking, rural experiences, and handmade plum essence soap making. In addition to enjoying a slow-paced half-day trip in Tainan’s backyard, this year also featured a nighttime photography theme, inviting photography experts to teach firefly shooting techniques, allowing the public to preserve the romantic glow of the night forever.

This year’s firefly watching season runs until May 12. On weekdays, those wishing to view fireflies can park at the Wulong Trail parking lot and walk into the mountains. On holidays, due to traffic control, vehicles must be parked at the Er Ceng Ping parking lot, then walk to the Wulong Trail before entering the firefly viewing area. From 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM every Saturday and Sunday during the firefly season, there is a free shuttle bus from the Mei Ling Information Station to the Er Ceng Ping parking lot, which the public is encouraged to use. Holiday package activities include hiking, rural experiences, and handmade plum essence soap making. The aforementioned programs require a fee, but those who simply wish to view fireflies are welcome to enter the mountains on their own.

 

In addition, the 2013 Tainan Mei Ling Firefly Watching Season has planned a Night Photography and Ice Friends Gathering on May 4–5. Starting at 5:00 PM, through on-site explanations by nighttime photography experts and sharing of scenic spots for firefly viewing, participants can experience the joy of nighttime photography and photographing fireflies.
